Fire at nursing home displaces residents
A fire in a local nursing home just before midnight Wednesday forced officials to find temporary shelter for 43 of the facilitiy's 93 residents. According to Capt. James T. Judkins Jr., of the Suffolk Fire Department, the fire, at the Nubjones Assisted Living Home, 2536 E. Washington St., appears to have started in the area of the heating and air conditioning unit of one of the rooms.Firefighters reported a small fire in that room that was contained there due to the activation of the sprinkler system.Fire only damaged that one room, said Judkins, but 13 others were uninhabitable due to smoke and water damage.Eight fire and rescue units, with 19 firefighters, arrived at 11:58 p.m., just minutes after the call for help went out, to find the nursing staff working to evacuate the residents.Facility personnel, firefighters and police officers helped direct the resident safely out of the building, where they remained until the situation resolved. There were no injuries.Units remained on scene until 1:51 a.m.
