Nursing home director praised for leadership ability

Unsettling news greeted Bill Kowalewski a week into his new job running The Nathaniel Witherell nursing home, as officials decided to nix a rebuilding plan following countless volunteer hours and more than $1 million in consulting fees.

That was nearly a year ago, and it marked the final blow to a plan that had stirred controversy since its inception in 1999.

Care for the caregiver

For the past seven years, Luverta Gibbs has visited seniors at their homes for a local social service agency. As part of the Senior Companion Program, she drops by and talks to shut-ins, makes sure they have food and medicine, sometimes takes them on day trips.

"You have to keep them motivated," said Gibbs, 69, on Wednesday. "I'm a fanatic for doing things for other people."

Now it's Gibbs who needs help.

A fire took her home and most of her possessions last month. For the last few weeks, she and her daughter Agnes Gibbs-Rose, 37, have been living in motels. Agnes has advanced lymphoma and has also been shuttling to hospitals for treatments and medicine.

In between searching for a new place to live and keeping her daughter alive, Gibbs found time to visit a client on Tuesday.

Four charged with spying for Israel

High State Security Prosecutor Hisham Badawi said the Egyptian, Mohamed Essam Ghoneim el-Attar, 31, had been arrested and charged. The rest of the spy ring were in Turkey and Canada, and arrest warrants had been issued for them.

Mr Badawi said the Israelis had recruited Attar while he was living in Turkey in Aug. 2001, had assisted him in obtaining a residency permit in Canada under a fake name and found him work in a bank.

Mr Attar was paid to spy on Egyptians and Arabs during his time in Turkey and Canada, and used his position in the bank to obtain information on specific accounts, Badawi added.

He was also expected to scout and approach potential recruits, according to Mr Badawi, and was paid $56,000 between Aug. 2001 and Jan. 1 2007, when he was arrested at Cairo airport as he entered Egypt for a family visit.
